Hello, I’m Robert Hoffman with Veterans Guide. In this video, we’re exploring the state-specific benefits available to disabled veterans residing in Texas.

Texas is home to nearly 1.5 million veterans, making it the state with the second highest veteran population.

Recognizing their service, Texas offers a variety of benefits tailored to disabled veterans. Let’s dive into these state-specific advantages.”
First, let’s discuss property tax exemptions. Texas provides substantial property tax relief to disabled veterans.

Veterans with a disability rating of 10% to 90% can receive a reduction in their home’s assessed value, ranging from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on the disability percentage. Those rated at 100% are entirely exempt from property taxes on their primary residence.

Additionally, the Housing for Texas Heroes Grant Program provides home modifications and repairs for veterans and their families, enhancing their quality of life.

Moving on to education benefits.

The Texas Hazelwood Act offers eligible veterans up to 150 credit hours of tuition exemption at state-supported colleges and universities. This benefit can also extend to dependents under certain conditions.

Next, employment benefits.

Texas extends a veterans’ preference in state government hiring, ensuring veterans receive favorable consideration for job openings in the public sector.

Disabled veterans in Texas may also be eligible for certain vehicle and transportation benefits.

Texas also offers a free driver’s license to veterans who are at least 60% disabled and honorably discharged. This benefit acknowledges the sacrifices made by our veterans and aims to ease their mobility within the state.

Texas also provides various recreational benefits to disabled veterans.

Disabled veterans with a 60% or higher disability rating, or the loss of use of a lower extremity, can receive hunting and fishing licenses at a reduced cost, promoting outdoor recreation among veterans.

Furthermore, Texas offers a State Parklands Passport, providing free admission to state parks for veterans with a 60% or higher disability rating or the loss of use of a lower extremity.
