Those with a VA disability rating of at least 10% can receive a $5,000 deduction on their home’s assessed value. Veterans with a 100% rating, as well as those who are quadriplegic, are exempt from paying property taxes on their primary residence.
Additionally, veterans who are paraplegic, require a wheelchair for mobility, or are legally blind, may also be exempt from real estate taxation, depending on their income.
Moving on to education benefits. Florida offers several programs to support veterans and their families.
The ‘Congressman CW Bill Young Veteran Tuition Waiver Program’ allows veterans to waive the out-of-state portion of tuition and fees, enabling them to pay in-state rates.
Additionally, Florida law provides a tuition waiver for disabled veterans using the GI Bill who don’t qualify for full federal benefits. This waiver covers the remaining tuition and fees not paid by the GI Bill.
Next, employment benefits. Florida extends a veterans’ preference in state, county, and municipal government hiring.

Florida offers a free driver’s license and license plate to veterans who are permanently and totally disabled. This benefit acknowledges the sacrifices made by our veterans and aims to ease their mobility within the state.
Florida also provides various recreational benefits to disabled veterans.
Disabled veterans who are residents of Florida can obtain a ‘Military Gold Sportsman’s License’ at a reduced fee. This license covers hunting, freshwater and saltwater fishing, and other associated activities, promoting outdoor recreation among veterans.
Lastly, Florida offers various support services through the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs (FDVA). These services include benefits and disability claims counseling, connecting veterans with earned federal and state benefits, services, and support.
